Nobody wants to see wrinkles on their face but it is inevitable as we age that these fine lines will start to develop. The older we get the more pronounced they get until your face can only be described as “lived in”.
But don’t despair, there are things you can do about wrinkles on the face. The first step is to learn what they and why they occur (or are more likely to occur than normal). After that you can start to do something about them. This series of posts will cover all the lines that you can expect to see cropping up on your face as you age, starting with Marionette lines.
What Are Marionette Lines ?
Marionette lines are the lines that start at the corners of your mouth and run down to your chin. In some cases the lines can also go upwards towards the nose but this isn’t as common. They are given this name in reference to the classic marionette puppets that have a separate mouth to the rest of the face, which gives the appearance of two long creases running down the mouth to the chin.
Why Do You Get Marionette Lines ?
Most people will get fine marionette lines as they age as the collagen around that part of the face decreases. Also fatty deposits around that part of the face may also decrease (lipoatrophy). This causes the skin to sag and the lines appear.
Some people are genetically predisposed to the lines and you will often see people that have very pronounced lines even though the rest of their face is wrinkle free.
Basically if your mother, father or grandparents have them, there is a good chance you will get them too. If this is the case there is not much you can do to prevent them appearing on your face.
With this said, there are environmental conditions that can make them worse. Over exposure to the sun and smoking are acknowledged to be bad for the skin. As the face is most likely to come in contact with smoke and sunlight, marionette lines can be affected by these factors.
Also, eating a poor diet and not getting enough exercise can make the skin age quicker than it should. The thinking behind this is that if you don’t get the vitamins and nutrients that can keep skin healthy then the outwards signs will become more apparent.
The same goes for exercise. Exercise keeps the body ticking over and keep it healthy. It can also detox the body (the skin especially) through sweating.
What Can Be Done About Them ?
Once you have the lines, it’s too late to prevent or reduce them naturally. You need to use an injectable or filler to reduce the appearance of them. Even an injectable or filler won’t reduce them, it will only “plump” up the skin around the lines making them seem finer and less noticeable.
Fillers or dermal filler are injected into the skin around the lines by a cosmetic doctor. There are all types of fillers that have different attributes. When considering a filler, you want to think about how long they will last and what they are made of. In most cases, you should consult a doctor when making the decision about what sort of filler is best for you.
