Turmeric is an important ingredient in many traditional Indian skincare products and has been for hundreds if not thousands of years. So much so that an Indian bride will often prepare a turmeric facial mask and apply it the night before her wedding. This is to ensure that she has beautiful glowing skin on the big day and looks her best. There are also symbolic reasons for applying turmeric and the “haldi rasam ceremony” (haldi is hindi for turmeric) epitomizes this. A turmeric paste is made and applied to the feet, knees, arms, hands and face. This is said to cleanse the bride and prepare her for marriage and her new path in life.
Whether you believe in the symbolism or not, applying turmeric to the skin can certainly improve it’s condition, so here are a few turmeric facial mask recipes that you might like to try out :
1. Turmeric Facial Mask for Acne
- Teaspoon of turmeric powder or paste
- Tablespoon of yogurt or
- Tablespoon of honey or
- Half tablespoon of each.
Add all the ingredients to a bowl and then mix them all up into a super golden looking paste.
The turmeric and honey are anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory so should help to reduce skin blemishes such as acne. They can also work on age spots and other forms of hyper-pigmentation.
Yoghurt has lactic acid in it which will act as a gentle skin peel. It will help to strip dead skin cells from your face and allow glowing new skin cells to shine through.
Coat your face with a thin layer of the paste and leave for 30 minutes if possible. Then rinse clean with warm water.
Unfortunately, this is not a miracle cure and it will not clear up your skin overnight. In fact, you should probably do it once a day for 30 days to start seeing really good results. But it’s really worth the effort, believe me.
This mask will help with acne but the combination of ingredients will also help the skin in general. As I have already said, yogurt is a great product to put on the skin as the lactic acid in it is known as an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which exfoliates the skin. This can give it a more glowing appearance and in the long run reduce things like wrinkles and fine lines.
With this in mind, you are not really limited to just these products for your facial mask or any skin product in fact. When you understand what makes up a product, it is easy to swap certain products.
For instance, swap yogurt for milk as it will also have lactic acid in it. It may not bring the same consistency as yogurt so add something to thicken it like flour or clay.
2. Turmeric and Avocado Face Mask
- 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon of mashed avocado
- half teaspoon of turmeric paste or powder
Mash and mix all the ingredients together into a smooth, lump free paste.
Apply to the face and leave for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with water.
Avocado has a high amount of oleic acid. This is a monounsaturated fatty acid which helps to moisturize and keep the skin hydrated. Avocado oil is often used in skincare products for this reason.
Oleic acid is also thought to rejuvenate damaged skin cells and ease inflamed and irritated skin.
Avocado has a high amount of vitamin c and e which are powerful antioxidants that can help reduce free radical damage.

An alternative to avocado is red papaya which also has many benefits for the skin.
3. Turmeric and Egg White Face Mask
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon of ground oats or rice powder
- half teaspoon of turmeric powder or paste
Grind rice or whole oats so that it is a rough powder.
Mix egg white, oats or rice powder and turmeric together.
Apply to the face in a circular motion to help exfoliate the skin.
Leave on the skin for 15-20 minutes and then rinse clean.
The exfoliating action will remove old skin cells to reveal new more glowing skin cells and the albumen in egg white will tighten the skin giving it a more youthful appearance.
